Events in Lille and its Metropolis

  • From Saturday 27 February to Sunday 05 June 2016 :
affiche lam modiglianiIn close collaboration with the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, the LaM will be presenting an exceptional retrospective of the work of Amedeo Modigliani. The museum holds one of the finest French public collections of the famous Montparnasse artist: no fewer than six paintings, eight drawings, and a rare marble sculpture, all brought together by Roger Dutilleul and Jean Masurel, founders of the LaM's collection.

The exhibition will offer a journey through the work of Amedeo Modigliani by exploring three aspects of a short but productive career... In the first place, the exhibition will highlight the dialogue that the young, classically trained Itadian artist maintained with sculpture from Antiquity and from non-Western traditions.

Another central dimension to his work was his practice of portraiture, which will hold a dominant place in the itinerary. Focus will be placed on the portraits that he made of his friends, most of them also part of the relationship between Modigliani and Dutilleul: between 1918 and 1946, the latter acquired about thirty paintings and a great many drawings by the artist covering all periods. That makes Roger Dutilleul, along with Dr Arnold Netter, one of the leading collectors of the artist's work.
